KUGB Welsh Championships

PORTHCAWL Shotokan Karate Club entered a strong team at the Welsh Championships on June 10th.

With many youngsters competing for the first time, the competition was heavily supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Tara Sinclair won the Ippon Kumite and was also awarded the Enoeda Cup for being the best Kumite competitor. This was the first time this cup has been awarded to a child, so it was a terrific achievement.

Kathryn Sinclair won the Girls’ Kumite (under 5ft 3ins) while Leah Nicholas, Owen Nicholas and Megan Lillycrop won the Junior Team Kata for the second year running.

Leah Nicholas narrowly lost in the final of the Girls’ Kumite (over 5ft 3ins) and Megan Lillycrop came a close third in the same competition.

Pamela Sinclair entered the women’s competitions for the first time and was up against experienced senior competitors, but she came third in the Senior Female Kumite and fourth in the Senior Female Kata.

She is also a former Junior British Champion in Kumite.

Club instructor Christian Wale came third in the Senior Male Kata and he entered a late team in the Senior Team Kata. The team consisted of Wale, Sinclair and Kathryn Sinclair and they finished second.

Also for the first time ever, the club has been fortunate enough to be sponsored by Peter Lynn & Partners Solicitors of Swansea, who supplied all club members with training suits.

Also, congratulations to Tara Sinclair and Richard Davies who both gained their 1st Dans at the recent Dan grading.

For further information please contact Christian Whale (5th Dan) on 07900986925 or come along to one of our training sessions.
