On Saturday 3rd February, four members of Porthcawl Shotokan Club traveled to Welshpool to take part in trials for the Welsh squad. Richard Davies, who is 16 and is attempting his black belt grading in the summer, was outstanding in being selected for the 'Under 21 Kumite team. Owen Nicholas (1st Dan) also gave an excellent performance to be selected in the 'Under 16'Kata team and Leah Nicholas (2nd Dan) also gave two outstanding performances to be selected in the 'Under 16'Kata and Kumite teams.

Instructor Christian Whale (4th Dan) has taught Richard, Owen and Leah for six years and is absolutely thrilled that they have made the Welsh Squad. Christian stated it is the training and commitment these members have put in that have made it possible and that they deserve every success. Leah Nicholas, Owen Nicholas and another club member Megan Lillicrop are the current Welsh Team Kata champions. The whole club is now looking forward to the British Championships in May and the Welsh Championships in June.

Christian boasts a number of Black Belt grades (1st Dan), with members as young as 10 getting their 1st Dan and two members aged 15 achieving their 2nd Dan last year. Christian is very keen for the club to progress and achieve and gradings are held regularly. If you are interested in learning karate, Porthcawl Shotokan Club is the club to join.
